What is a PRP facial?

It is microneedling using your own platelet-rich plasma, or PRP. We take a small blood sample from your arm and spin it in a centrifuge to separate the plasma, which is rich in platelets. Platelets carry growth factors involved in healing. The PRP is applied to your skin during microneedling, with the aim of supporting new collagen for dull skin, fine lines, enlarged pores, uneven texture and acne scarring.

Does a PRP facial actually work?

The evidence is promising but modest. Most research looks at acne scarring, where pooled studies suggest that adding PRP to microneedling gives better scar improvement and higher satisfaction than microneedling alone. The studies are small, though, and use different ways of preparing PRP. For general skin ageing, dullness and pores there is less research, and much of the benefit is likely to come from the microneedling itself.

When will I see results?

Your skin needs time to repair, so change is gradual. New collagen keeps forming over the 8 to 12 weeks after microneedling, which is why results build across a course rather than overnight. Results vary from person to person. A PRP facial can refresh texture and tone, but it will not lift loose skin or replace lost volume.

How many sessions will I need?

Most people have three sessions, four to six weeks apart, followed by a top-up once or twice a year. Each session costs £250, which covers your skin assessment, blood draw, PRP preparation, numbing cream and full microneedling. Deeper acne scarring may need more sessions, and we will talk through a realistic plan once we have seen your skin.

What happens on the day, and does it hurt?

Allow about an hour. Marina checks your skin and medical history, applies numbing cream, then takes a small blood sample from your arm, much like a routine blood test. While the cream works, your blood is spun to separate the PRP, which is then used during microneedling. The blood draw feels like a quick scratch, and with numbing cream most people feel light pressure. Marina carries out the whole treatment herself.

Who should not have a PRP facial?

It is not suitable for people with some blood disorders, anyone taking blood-thinning medicines, during pregnancy, or with an active skin infection. Microneedling is also not carried out over active breakouts or cold sores. Tell us if you scar easily or have a condition that affects healing. Please do not stop a prescribed medicine to have this treatment; we will check your medical history first.

What are the side effects and risks?

Expect redness like mild sunburn for 24 to 48 hours, and possibly slight bruising where blood was taken. Because PRP comes from your own blood, the risk of an allergic reaction is very low, but it is not zero. Less common risks include temporary darkening of the skin, more likely in deeper skin tones, and infection. Rarely, overly aggressive microneedling can leave marks, which is why depth is set carefully for each area.

Why does it matter where I have a PRP facial?

Any treatment that handles blood and uses needles depends on strict hygiene. Serious blood-borne infections have been linked to PRP facials abroad at unlicensed premises with poor infection control. Wherever you go, check who is treating you, their registration, and how blood and equipment are handled. What is the aftercare?

Avoid make-up for 24 hours, and avoid strenuous exercise, saunas and alcohol for 48 hours. Wear SPF every day while your skin settles and afterwards. If you notice anything unexpected, such as worsening pain, swelling or signs of infection, contact the clinic.

How is this different from other microneedling serums or PRP for hair?

Accepted Answer

The microneedling is the same. The difference is what goes onto the skin: your own plasma here, rather than a vitamin, polynucleotide or exosome solution. Exosome treatment uses a ready-made product, so no blood is taken. PRP hair treatment is a separate service where PRP is injected into the scalp to support hair, rather than applied to the face during microneedling.
