What is jawline filler?
Jawline filler is a dermal filler treatment for the lower face. A firm hyaluronic acid (HA) filler is placed along the jawbone and at the angle of the jaw to add definition, improve the line from ear to chin, or balance the jaw with the rest of the face.
HA is a substance found naturally in the skin that holds water. Fillers made for the jaw are usually firmer than lip fillers, because they need to hold shape and give structure. Some filler is placed close to the bone and some in the soft tissue, depending on your assessment.
Jawline filler can add definition and structure. It cannot tighten loose skin, remove jowls or reduce fat under the chin, and it does not give the results of surgery.
Which dermal fillers are used for jawline filler?
Juvenology Clinic uses Vivacy's Stylage range alongside other dermal filler products where appropriate. Stylage is a family of hyaluronic acid fillers made by Vivacy, with different formulations for different depths and areas.
For facial volume, Vivacy lists Stylage XL and Stylage XXL as designed to restore or add facial volume, placed in the deep dermis or below the skin. Some versions contain a local anaesthetic for comfort. Marina chooses the product after your assessment, based on your bone structure, tissue and the plan you agree.
What concerns can jawline filler address?
The jawline frames the lower face, and small changes here affect how the chin, cheeks and neck look. With age, the jawbone gradually loses volume, fat moves lower and the skin loses elasticity, so the line from ear to chin can soften. Some people simply have a less defined jaw by nature.
Jawline filler may help with:
A soft or undefined jawline
A jaw angle that lacks definition
Mild unevenness between the two sides
A lower face that looks out of balance with the chin or cheeks
Mild jowling, where adding structure along the jaw can make it less obvious
If the width at the angle of your jaw comes from muscle, or your main concern is loose skin or fat under the chin, filler is unlikely to be the answer. Suitability and results vary between individuals.
Benefits of jawline filler
Can add definition along the jaw and at the jaw angle
Can improve balance between the jaw, chin and cheeks
Can be planned for a stronger or a softer contour, depending on your goals
Results are visible straight away
Firmer jawline fillers often last longer than fillers in more mobile areas
Who may be suitable for jawline filler?
You may be suitable if you are 18 or over, in good general health, and would like more definition or balance along the jaw. Jawline filler suits both men and women, and the plan is built around the result you want.
Sometimes the chin is the key to a balanced profile, and treating it alongside or instead of the jaw gives a better result. If loose skin is your main concern, a skin-tightening treatment such as HIFU or a surgical opinion may suit you better. Marina will tell you if something else would serve you better.
Who may not be suitable?
Jawline filler may not be appropriate, or may need to be delayed, if you:
Are under 18
Are pregnant or breastfeeding
Have an active skin infection, spots or inflammation along the jaw
Have reacted to filler or its ingredients before
Have had complications from filler, such as lumps or migration
Have significant loose skin along the jaw or neck, where filler may add weight
Have certain medical conditions or take certain medicines
Please tell us about your medical history and all medicines at your consultation. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice from your prescriber.
What happens during your consultation
Marina will ask what you would like to change and look at your face from the front, side and at an angle. She will assess the jaw in relation to your chin, cheeks, lips and neck, because the lower face works as a whole.
She will go through your medical history, medicines, allergies and any previous filler or cosmetic treatments. You will discuss realistic outcomes, risks and alternatives. If jawline filler is not the right option, she will say so. You do not have to go ahead on the day.
What results can you expect?
Jawline filler may help create a clearer line from ear to chin and a more defined jaw angle. The change can be subtle or more noticeable, depending on your starting point and the plan agreed.
You will see a change straight away, although swelling can affect the shape for a few days. Results depend on your bone structure, skin quality and the amount of filler used. Filler cannot guarantee perfect symmetry. Marina can discuss realistic expectations with you.
How long does jawline filler last?
Firmer fillers in the jawline often last longer than lip filler, typically up to around 18 months. This is an estimate, not a guarantee. The duration depends on the product, the amount placed, your metabolism and whether you have had filler before. Results fade gradually as the filler breaks down.
Recovery and aftercare
Most people go back to their usual routine soon after treatment. For the first few days you may notice:
Swelling along the jaw
Tenderness, especially when chewing or touching the area
Bruising at the injection points
Redness
Temporary unevenness while swelling settles
Recovery varies. You will receive aftercare advice after treatment. See our aftercare guide for injectable treatments.
Urgent warning signs: contact the clinic immediately on 07413 138 825 if you have severe or worsening pain, or skin along the jaw, chin or lips that turns pale, white, dusky or blotchy. If your vision changes, call 999 or go to A&E immediately.
Risks and considerations
Risks of jawline filler include:
Common: swelling, tenderness, bruising and redness
Lumps or irregularities: filler can sometimes be felt along the jaw
Asymmetry: the two sides may settle differently
Overcorrection: too much filler can make the lower face look heavy, which is why we plan conservatively
Infection, allergic or inflammatory reactions: uncommon but possible
Vascular occlusion: an artery crosses the jawline. Rarely, filler can block a blood vessel and damage the skin without urgent treatment
Visual complications: very rare, but possible with any filler injected in the face
Most hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved if needed, after a face-to-face assessment by a prescriber.
