Hyaluronic acid filler is a gel placed beneath the skin to restore volume, add shape or give support, for example in the lips, cheeks, chin or jawline, and to soften some folds. It doesn't lift loose skin the way surgery does, and it doesn't improve skin quality. For dull or crepey skin, a skin booster such as Profhilo or Juvelook may suit you better. Lines that appear when you frown or raise your brows are discussed at a consultation for lines and wrinkles.

It depends on the area and on you. Lip filler commonly lasts about 6 to 12 months. Firmer fillers in the cheeks, chin and jawline often last longer, typically up to around 18 months. Hyaluronic acid breaks down gradually, so the effect fades slowly over time, and you would need a top-up to keep it.

Allow up to an hour, including your assessment. Marina looks at your face at rest, in expression and in profile, and asks about your medical history and any previous filler. Together you agree a plan: which areas, how much, and the result you want. There's no pressure to go ahead. If you do, the filler is placed with a fine needle or a cannula (a thin, blunt-tipped tube).

You'll usually feel some stinging or pressure as the filler goes in. Most hyaluronic acid fillers contain a local anaesthetic, which numbs the area as treatment continues. Results are visible straight away, although early swelling can make the area look fuller for the first few days.

Swelling, tenderness and bruising are common and can last a few days. Less often, lumps or infection can occur. A rare but serious risk is filler blocking a blood vessel, which needs urgent treatment. Warning signs include severe or worsening pain, or skin that turns pale, white, dusky or blotchy. Most hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved if needed, for example if a blood vessel is affected or if you're unhappy with how the filler has settled. Dissolving uses a prescription-only medicine, and UK professional standards require a prescriber to assess you face to face before it is prescribed.

Our filler treatments are for adults aged 18 and over. In England it is a criminal offence to give cosmetic filler injections to anyone under 18, except in limited cases directed by a doctor, and a parent's consent doesn't change that. Please tell us about any medical conditions, medicines, previous cosmetic treatments, pregnancy or breastfeeding, as these can affect whether filler is suitable or whether it's better to wait.

She is an NMC-registered nurse with more than 25 years of nursing experience, and she is verified by the JCCP (Joint Council for Cosmetic Practitioners). Subtle Lip is £200 and Signature Lip £250. Chin, marionette lines or perioral lines are £250. Nasolabial folds or non-surgical nose reshaping are £300. Cheeks, jawline, temples or tear troughs are £400, and an 8-point full-face plan is £800. Your plan and its cost are agreed with you before any filler is placed.

That's a sensible place to start. Filler isn't the answer to every concern, and the assessment is there to find out what is causing the change you've noticed, whether that's lost volume, loose skin or skin quality. If something other than filler would suit you better, Marina will say so, and you can take time to decide.
