Polynucleotides in Kent

Polynucleotides are purified fragments of DNA taken from fish (salmon or trout), injected just beneath the surface of the skin. They're thought to support the cells that make collagen and elastin and to help skin hold water. The aim is thicker, firmer, more even skin with softer fine lines. They don't change your face shape or expression, and they don't alter your own DNA.

They're most often used for thin, crepey skin under the eyes. They can also be used on the face, neck, décolleté (upper chest) and the backs of the hands. Marina uses Plinest, Lumi Eyes or Nucleofill, choosing the product to match the area being treated.

They may help when the shadow comes from thin, crepey skin, because thicker skin can look less shadowed. Dark circles caused by pigment, or by a hollow tear trough, usually need a different approach. We look at what is causing yours at your assessment before recommending anything.

The evidence is encouraging but limited. Most studies so far are small, use different products and methods, and follow people for short periods, so there's no agreed standard course yet. Results vary and can't be guaranteed. We'll give you an honest view of what is realistic for your skin.

Because they're fish-derived, polynucleotides aren't suitable if you have a fish allergy. They're usually avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and an infection in the area means waiting until it has cleared. Please tell us about any medical conditions, allergies and medicines, including blood thinners, at your assessment.

Most people have two or three sessions, two to four weeks apart. Skin quality improves gradually over the weeks after treatment. Results can last 6 to 12 months and are often maintained with one or two top-ups a year, although this varies from person to person.

Allow around an hour, including an allergy and skin check. The injections are fine and shallow, and most people feel a brief sting. Small raised bumps settle within a day or two, and any bruising fades over a few days. Avoid make-up for 12 hours, and avoid strenuous exercise, saunas and alcohol for 48 hours.

Profhilo is hyaluronic acid, used mainly for hydration and bounce across the face and neck. Juvelook combines hyaluronic acid with PDLLA, an ingredient intended to encourage collagen. Polynucleotides focus on skin repair and are often preferred for the delicate under-eye area. Some people have more than one at different times, and we'll advise what suits your skin.

Polynucleotides cost £250 per area per session, or £675 for a prepaid course of three sessions (a 10% saving). Each appointment includes your assessment.

Marina carries out every polynucleotide treatment herself. She is an NMC-registered nurse, verified by the JCCP (Joint Council for Cosmetic Practitioners), trained in aesthetic injectables, and has more than 25 years of nursing experience.
