What are exosomes, in plain terms?

Exosomes are tiny packets that cells release to pass messages to one another. They carry proteins and other signalling molecules. In skin treatment, an exosome solution is applied to the skin with the aim of supporting its own repair. We use ASCE+, a ready-made product from the South Korean company ExoCoBio, made for use on the skin. Marina applies it straight after microneedling. It is never injected.

How strong is the evidence for exosome treatment?

It is early. Laboratory research is promising, but studies in people are few, small and short, and they use different products, so their results are hard to compare. Recent reviews report early signs of benefit for skin ageing, pores and acne scarring, and call for larger, longer trials. Microneedling on its own has a stronger evidence base, so some of any change you see will come from the microneedling itself.

What results can I realistically expect?

Some people notice brighter, more even-looking skin within a week or two, and texture can keep improving over the following weeks as the skin repairs. Results vary from person to person, and one session will not give a dramatic change. Exosome treatment does not lift loose skin or replace lost volume. What happens during the appointment?

A full-face appointment takes around an hour, and Marina carries out every exosome treatment herself. She starts by checking your skin and medical history to confirm microneedling is suitable. She then microneedles your skin, setting the needle depth for your skin, and applies ASCE+ straight away so it is worked into the tiny channels the needles create. Most people describe the microneedling as a light prickling.

How much does it cost, and do I need a course?

Each session costs £300, which covers the microneedling and the ASCE+ solution. Treatment is pay as you go, so there is no course to buy and you can book a single session. Research has not yet settled the ideal number or spacing of exosome sessions, so we talk through what makes sense for your skin rather than recommending a fixed package.

Question 6

Who should not have exosome treatment?

Accepted Answer

Because it involves microneedling, it is not carried out over active breakouts, broken skin, cold sores or a skin infection. Tell us if you scar easily or form raised scars, have a condition or medicine that affects healing or immunity, or have allergies. Exosome products have not been studied in pregnancy or breastfeeding, so let us know if either applies. We check all of this before treatment.

What are the side effects, and what is the aftercare?

Skin usually looks pink for 24 to 48 hours and may feel warm or tight. Avoid make-up for 24 hours, and retinol, saunas and direct sun for 48 hours, then wear SPF every day. Less common risks of microneedling include temporary darkening of the skin, more likely in deeper skin tones, and infection. Most serious reactions reported in exosome research followed injection, which we never do.

Are exosomes legal in the UK?

ASCE+ is sold in the UK as a skincare product for use on the skin, and that is the only way we use it. Marina applies it to the surface straight after microneedling. We never inject exosomes.

Question 9

How do exosomes compare with the PRP facial?

Accepted Answer

Both treatments use microneedling. The PRP facial uses plasma prepared from a small sample of your own blood, so it needs a blood draw. Exosome treatment uses a ready-made solution, so no blood is taken. PRP with microneedling has more published research, mainly for acne scarring, although that evidence is also modest. The PRP facial costs £250 and exosome treatment costs £300 per session.
