What is lip filler?
Lip filler is an injectable treatment that places hyaluronic acid (HA) gel into or around the lips. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule found naturally in the skin, where it holds water. In filler, it is cross-linked into a gel so it stays in place and breaks down gradually.
Depending on the plan, filler can be placed along the lip border to sharpen definition, into the body of the lip to add volume, or in small amounts to improve balance between the two sides. Fillers differ in firmness, flexibility and how far they spread, so the product is chosen for the job.
Lip filler can refine shape and add fullness. It cannot change the underlying structure of your teeth, jaw or chin. It does not stop the lips ageing, and it does not suit every lip. If more volume would look out of proportion with your face, we will tell you.
Which dermal fillers are used for lip filler?
Juvenology Clinic uses dermal fillers from Vivacy's Stylage range, alongside other filler products where appropriate. Stylage is a range of hyaluronic acid-based fillers made by Vivacy in France. Each product in the range has a different formulation and different intended uses, so they are not interchangeable.
For lips, Vivacy lists Stylage Special Lips and Stylage Lips Plus as designed to redefine the lips and/or add lip volume. It also lists Stylage S for lip contouring, and Stylage M for lip contouring and lip augmentation. Some versions contain a local anaesthetic to make treatment more comfortable. Vivacy notes that results may need several touch-ups over time.
Marina chooses the product at your appointment, based on your lip tissue, your goals and the plan you agree. We do not recommend a product before we have assessed you.
What lip concerns can filler address?
Your lips have several parts that affect how they look:
The vermilion: the pink part of the lip, which holds most of the volume.
The vermilion border: the edge where the lip meets the skin. A crisp border gives definition.
The Cupid's bow: the curved peaks of the upper lip.
Upper and lower lip proportions: in most faces the lower lip is fuller than the upper lip.
With age, lips can become thinner, the border can soften, and fine vertical lines can appear. Some people simply have naturally thin or uneven lips. Filler may help with:
Thin or flat lips, or lips that have lost fullness
A soft or blurred lip line
Mild unevenness between the two sides
An upper lip that looks small next to the lower lip
Fine vertical lines above the lip are a different concern. Our perioral line filler page covers those. Results and suitability vary from person to person.
Benefits of lip filler
Can add fullness to thin lips or lips that have lost volume
Can improve definition along the lip border
Can improve the balance between the upper and lower lip, or between the two sides
Results are visible straight away, although swelling settles over the following days
Hyaluronic acid filler breaks down gradually, so the change is not permanent
Who may be suitable for lip filler?
You may be suitable if you are 18 or over, in good general health, and want a change to the shape, definition or volume of your lips. Good candidates usually want an improvement that suits their face rather than a particular celebrity's lips.
Some people are better suited to a different approach. If your concern is lines around the mouth rather than the lips themselves, perioral treatment may be more appropriate. If you have a lot of old filler in your lips, it may be better to wait or have it assessed first. A face-to-face assessment decides suitability.
Who may not be suitable?
Lip filler may not be appropriate, or may need to wait, if you:
Are under 18. Giving cosmetic filler to under-18s in England is a criminal offence, and parental consent does not change that
Are pregnant or breastfeeding
Have a cold sore, spots or any infection on or near the lips
Have had a reaction to filler or its ingredients before
Have had problems with filler in the past, such as lumps or migration
Have certain medical conditions or take certain medicines
Are hoping for a result that filler cannot safely give
Please tell us about all your medical conditions and medicines at your consultation. Do not stop any prescribed medicine without speaking to the doctor who prescribed it.
What happens during your consultation
Your consultation is a conversation, not a sales pitch. Marina will ask what bothers you about your lips and look at them alongside the rest of your face. She will go through your medical history, medicines, allergies and any previous filler or cosmetic treatments.
You will discuss what lip filler can realistically achieve for you, the risks, and any alternatives. If filler is not the right answer, Marina will say so. You are welcome to take time to decide.
What results can you expect?
Lip filler may help improve the shape, definition or fullness of your lips. The change can be subtle or more noticeable, depending on the option you choose and your starting point. Results depend on your lip anatomy, tissue quality and the plan agreed.
Lips are often swollen for the first few days, so they can look fuller and less even than the final result. Natural lips are rarely perfectly symmetrical, and filler cannot guarantee perfect symmetry. Marina can talk through realistic expectations at your consultation.
How long does lip filler last?
Lip filler commonly lasts about 6 to 12 months. This is a typical range, not a guarantee. The lips move constantly, which tends to break filler down faster than in less mobile areas. How long yours lasts depends on the product used, how much is placed, your metabolism and whether you have had filler before. The effect fades gradually, and you would need a top-up to keep it.
Recovery and aftercare
Most people go back to normal activities soon after treatment. In the first few days you may notice:
Swelling, which is often more marked in the lips than in other areas
Bruising or tenderness at the injection points
Redness
Small bumps or temporary unevenness while swelling settles
Recovery varies from person to person. You will receive aftercare advice after your treatment. You can also read our aftercare guide for injectable treatments.
When to get urgent help: contact the clinic straight away on 07413 138 825 if you have severe or worsening pain, or skin on or around the lips that turns pale, white, dusky or blotchy. These can be signs of filler affecting a blood vessel, which needs urgent treatment. If your vision changes, call 999 or go to A&E immediately.
Risks and considerations
All filler treatments carry risks. In the lips, these include:
Common: swelling, bruising, tenderness and redness, which usually settle within days
Cold sores: lip injections can trigger an outbreak in people who get them
Lumps or irregularities: filler can sometimes feel or look uneven
Asymmetry: one side may settle differently from the other
Infection, allergic or inflammatory reactions: less common, but possible
Migration: filler can occasionally spread beyond the lip border
Vascular occlusion: rarely, filler blocks a blood vessel. Without urgent treatment this can cause skin damage. The lips have a rich blood supply and are among the higher-risk areas named by the JCCP
Most hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved if needed. Dissolving uses a prescription-only medicine and requires a face-to-face assessment by a prescriber.
