What is cheek filler?
Cheek filler is a dermal filler treatment for the mid-face, the area between your lower eyelids and the corners of your mouth. A hyaluronic acid (HA) filler is placed at a chosen depth to replace lost volume or to add projection over the cheekbone.
Fillers made for the cheeks are usually firmer than lip fillers. A firmer gel is better at holding shape and giving support. Some filler is placed close to the bone, and some higher in the soft tissue, depending on what your assessment shows.
Cheek filler can restore some volume and improve contour. It cannot tighten loose skin or reverse sagging the way surgery can. It does not improve skin texture or remove wrinkles.
Which dermal fillers are used for cheek filler?
Juvenology Clinic uses Vivacy's Stylage range alongside other dermal filler products where appropriate. Stylage is a family of hyaluronic acid fillers made by Vivacy. Each formulation is designed for different depths and areas, so the range is not one-size-fits-all.
For facial volume, Vivacy lists Stylage XL and Stylage XXL as designed to restore or add facial volume, placed in the deep dermis or below the skin. Some versions contain a local anaesthetic for comfort. These are Class III medical devices, intended for use only by trained healthcare professionals.
The product is chosen by Marina after your assessment, based on your tissue, bone structure and the plan you agree.
What concerns can cheek filler address?
The cheeks sit at the centre of the face, and changes here affect the areas around them. With age:
The fat pads in the cheek gradually lose volume and can shift downwards
The bone beneath the mid-face slowly changes shape
The cheek can lose its rounded contour and look flatter
Shadows can form below the eyes, and the folds beside the nose can deepen
Cheek filler may help with:
Flattened or hollow-looking cheeks
A lack of definition along the cheekbones
Mild unevenness between the two cheeks
Volume loss that leaves the face looking tired
Because the cheek supports surrounding areas, restoring some volume here can sometimes soften the look of nearby hollows. It does not always do so, and it does not replace treatment for those areas where they need it. Suitability and results vary between individuals.
Benefits of cheek filler
Can restore some lost mid-face volume
Can add definition and projection over the cheekbones
Can improve the balance between the two sides of the face
Results are visible straight away
Firmer cheek fillers often last longer than fillers in more mobile areas
Who may be suitable for cheek filler?
You may be suitable if you are 18 or over, in good general health, and have mid-face volume loss or would like more cheek definition. Good candidates want to look refreshed and balanced rather than dramatically different.
If your main concern is loose or sagging skin, filler alone may not give the result you want. A skin-tightening treatment, or a referral for a surgical opinion, may suit you better. If your concern is crepey or dull skin, a skin booster such as Profhilo may be more appropriate. Marina will tell you if something else would serve you better.
Who may not be suitable?
Cheek filler may not be appropriate, or may need to be delayed, if you:
Are under 18
Are pregnant or breastfeeding
Have an active skin infection, spots or inflammation on the cheeks
Have reacted to filler or its ingredients before
Have had complications from filler, such as lumps, migration or swelling that came and went
Have certain medical conditions or take certain medicines
Want a degree of change that would look out of proportion with your face
Please tell us about your medical history and all medicines at your consultation. Never stop a prescribed medicine without advice from your prescriber.
What happens during your consultation
We start by asking what you have noticed in your face and when it began. Marina then assesses your mid-face in relation to your eyes, nose, jaw and lips, because the cheeks rarely change on their own.
She will ask about your health, medicines, allergies and any filler or cosmetic treatments you have had. You will talk through realistic outcomes, risks and alternatives. If cheek filler is not the right option, you will hear that plainly. Booking a consultation does not commit you to treatment.
What results can you expect?
Cheek filler may help restore some fullness to the mid-face and improve the contour of the cheekbones. Some people prefer a subtle refresh, while others want more noticeable definition. The plan is built around your anatomy and what suits your face.
You will see a change straight away, although swelling can make the cheeks look fuller for a few days. Results depend on your bone structure, skin quality and the amount of volume lost. Cheek filler does not guarantee perfect symmetry. Marina can discuss realistic expectations with you.
How long does cheek filler last?
Firmer fillers in the cheeks often last longer than lip filler, typically up to around 18 months. This is an estimate, not a guarantee. The duration depends on the product, the amount placed, the depth, your metabolism and whether you have had filler before. Results fade gradually as the filler breaks down. Our guide to cheek fillers looks at the evidence on duration in more detail.
Recovery and aftercare
Most people return to their usual routine soon after cheek filler. For the first few days you may notice:
Swelling
Tenderness, especially when touching the area or chewing
Bruising at the injection sites
Redness
Temporary unevenness while swelling settles
Recovery varies. You will receive aftercare advice after treatment. Read our aftercare guide for injectable treatments for general guidance.
Urgent warning signs: contact the clinic immediately on 07413 138 825 if you have severe or worsening pain, or skin that turns pale, white, dusky or blotchy. If you notice any change in your vision, call 999 or go to A&E straight away.
Risks and considerations
Risks of cheek filler include:
Common: swelling, tenderness, bruising and redness
Lumps or irregularities: filler can sometimes be felt or seen, particularly where skin is thin
Asymmetry: the two sides may settle differently
Overcorrection: too much volume can look unnatural, which is why we plan conservatively
Infection, allergic or inflammatory reactions: uncommon but possible
Vascular occlusion: rarely, filler blocks a blood vessel, which can damage the skin without urgent treatment
Visual complications: very rarely, filler injected in the face can affect blood supply to the eye
Risk depends on the area, the product, the technique and your own circumstances. Most hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved if needed, after a face-to-face assessment by a prescriber.
