CRYOPEN TREATMENT

CryoPen is a medical-grade cryotherapy device that uses a fine, precisely controlled jet of nitrous oxide under high pressure to destroy unwanted skin lesions by freezing them to minus 89 degrees Celsius. The mechanism is called cryonecrosis. When tissue is frozen rapidly to this temperature, ice crystals form inside the cells of the lesion, destroying the cell membranes and causing the tissue to die. The body then clears the destroyed tissue naturally over the days and weeks following treatment, leaving healthy surrounding skin intact. Older cryotherapy methods using liquid nitrogen spray or cotton swabs could not achieve this level of precision. CryoPen is effective for a wide range of benign skin lesions. The key word is benign. Before any lesion is treated at Juvenology, it is assessed clinically to confirm it is appropriate for cryotherapy and does not require further investigation. Not every lesion is suitable for CryoPen. Lesions that are irregular in shape, rapidly changing, bleeding, or have any features of concern are not treated. They are assessed and referred for further investigation. This clinical assessment before treatment is not optional and it is not a formality. It is the step that ensures CryoPen is being used as a safe and appropriate tool rather than applied indiscriminately.

CryoPen has an excellent safety profile when used correctly on appropriately assessed lesions by a practitioner with clinical training. The technology is well established and its mechanism of action is well understood. The risks are real but manageable and almost always predictable. Patients with darker skin tones are counselled specifically about the risk of pigmentation change before any treatment is agreed. This is not a reason to avoid CryoPen but it is a reason to have an honest conversation about the specific risk profile for your skin type.

Most patients describe the sensation during CryoPen treatment as a brief sharp sting or burning feeling at the moment the nitrous oxide jet contacts the skin, lasting only for the duration of the freeze, which in most cases is just seconds. The level of discomfort varies with the location and size of the lesion being treated. Local anaesthetic is not routinely required for most CryoPen treatments given how brief the freeze is. For plantar warts and verrucas, where a longer freeze time is needed to reach sufficient depth, we discuss comfort management at consultation. This depends entirely on the type of lesion being treated, its size, its depth, and how it responds to the initial treatment. Warts and verrucas consistently require more sessions than other lesion types because of their viral origin and the depth at which the virus resides in the tissue. The immune response also plays a role, and some patients clear viral lesions faster than others regardless of treatment technique. The healing process after CryoPen is predictable and follows a consistent pattern. The most important aftercare instruction is to leave the area alone. Do not pick, scratch, or attempt to remove the scab or blister. The periorbital area and eyelid margin require particular care and are only treated when the lesion is clearly appropriate for cryotherapy and the technique can be applied with sufficient precision to protect the eye. CryoPen can be used on darker skin tones but requires specific consideration and an honest conversation at consultation about the risk of pigmentation change. Melanocytes, the cells responsible for skin pigmentation, are more sensitive to cold injury than surrounding cells. When CryoPen freezes a lesion in darker skin, there is a higher risk that the melanocytes in and around the treated area are affected, leading to temporary or in some cases permanent hypopigmentation, a lighter patch, or hyperpigmentation, a darker patch, at the treatment site. This risk does not mean CryoPen is unavailable for patients with darker skin. It means the decision to proceed is made with full information about the specific risk profile for your skin type and the lesion being treated. There is no fixed limit on the number of lesions that can be treated in one appointment. In practice, the factors that determine how many lesions are treated in a single session are the size and location of the lesions, the total treatment time, and the patient's tolerance. It is efficient, avoids multiple appointments, and the healing process for all treated sites occurs simultaneously rather than sequentially.
