Oestradiol (E2) is the main oestrogen during the reproductive years. It is produced mostly by the ovaries in women and, in much smaller amounts, by the testes and adrenal glands in men. This test measures oestradiol in one blood sample and gives you the laboratory's report with its reference range.
Before you book
- Price: £50. This covers laboratory analysis and your laboratory report.
- Where: Your blood sample is taken from a vein by our team at 82 King Street, Maidstone, or at a partner clinic near you, anywhere in the UK.
- Preparation: Note the first day of your last period, and tell us about any contraception or HRT.
- Results: the laboratory's report shows each result beside its reference range. We confirm the expected turnaround and any collection fee before you book.
- Optional: a written interpretation (£50) or a results consultation with Marina (£100).
After you order, we contact you to arrange your blood draw. A postal finger-prick kit may be possible for this test: please ask before ordering.
Oestradiol rises and falls through the menstrual cycle and can swing widely from week to week around the menopause. A single result is therefore read together with your cycle day, symptoms and, often, FSH. NICE advises that oestradiol should not be used to diagnose perimenopause or menopause in women over 45.
What is measured
- Oestradiol (measured): serum oestradiol, usually reported in pmol/L.
Useful for
- Supporting a GP or specialist assessment of absent or irregular periods
- Women under 45 with menopausal symptoms, alongside FSH and clinical review
- Men with breast tissue enlargement (gynaecomastia), as part of a GP assessment
- A level requested by your prescriber while using oestradiol patches, gel or implants
Sample: venous blood (serum), timed to your cycle where relevant. Biomarkers: 1. Interpretation: not included in the price; an optional written report or results consultation can be added.
