This test measures serum iron: the amount of iron being carried in your bloodstream by the transport protein transferrin at the moment your sample is taken. Serum iron rises and falls through the day and after meals, so on its own it is a limited guide to whether your body has too little or too much iron. Please read the notes below before choosing this test.

What is measured
- Serum iron (measured): iron bound to transferrin in the blood at the time of sampling.
Useful for
- Adding serum iron to recent ferritin or full blood count results you already have
- Repeating a serum iron result under the same conditions as a previous test
- Providing a result a clinician has specifically asked for
If your main question is whether you are low in iron, ferritin with a full blood count usually answers it better. Several of our wider panels include these.
The price covers laboratory analysis and the laboratory's report with its reference range. Interpretation and consultations are optional.
Sample: blood sample, ideally in the morning before eating. Biomarkers: 1.
