If you are or might be pregnant and have tummy pain (especially on one side), pain in the tip of your shoulder, vaginal bleeding, dizziness or fainting, do not wait for a blood test. Call 999 or go to A&E if pain is sudden and severe or you feel faint, and contact NHS 111 or your GP for other symptoms. These can be signs of an ectopic pregnancy, which needs urgent NHS assessment.

Human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) is the hormone produced in pregnancy by the developing placenta. This test measures the amount of hCG in a blood sample and gives you the laboratory's report with its reference information. It is intended for non-urgent situations, such as wanting a laboratory-measured result to take to your GP or midwife.
What is measured
- hCG (measured): the quantity of hCG in serum, reported in IU/L.
Useful for
- A laboratory-measured hCG result when you have no worrying symptoms
- Clarifying an unclear home pregnancy test before seeing your GP
- A one-off result requested by your own clinician as part of planned, non-urgent care
Sample: venous blood (serum). Biomarkers: 1. Interpretation: not included in the price; an optional written report or results consultation can be added.
