Cortisol is a steroid hormone made by the adrenal glands. It helps regulate blood sugar, blood pressure, inflammation and the body's response to physical and emotional stress. This test measures cortisol in a single morning blood sample and gives you the laboratory's report with its reference range.

Cortisol has a strong daily rhythm, peaking in the early morning and falling to its lowest around midnight, so the sample should be taken between 8am and 9am. A single morning result can support a doctor's assessment of adrenal function, but it cannot diagnose Cushing's syndrome or Addison's disease on its own, and it is not a measure of everyday stress.
What is measured
- Cortisol (measured): total serum cortisol at the time of the sample, usually reported in nmol/L.
Useful for
- A properly timed 9am cortisol result to share with your GP while symptoms are being assessed
- A morning cortisol your own clinician has asked you to arrange
