A laboratory blood test that identifies your ABO blood group (A, B, AB or O) and your RhD type (positive or negative), with additional subgrouping performed by the laboratory. Together, ABO and RhD give the eight main blood groups used in everyday medicine.
Before you book
- Price: £120. This covers laboratory analysis and your laboratory report.
- Where: Your blood sample is taken from a vein by our team at 82 King Street, Maidstone, or at a partner clinic near you, anywhere in the UK.
- Preparation: No preparation is needed.
- Results: the laboratory's report shows each result beside its reference range. We confirm the expected turnaround and any collection fee before you book.
- Optional: a written interpretation (£50) or a results consultation with Marina (£100).
After you order, we contact you to arrange your blood draw. A postal finger-prick kit may be possible for this test: please ask before ordering.
This test is for personal information. Hospitals and maternity services always carry out their own blood grouping before a transfusion or during pregnancy, so this result cannot be used for transfusion, cross-matching or antenatal care.
What is measured
- ABO group: whether your red cells carry the A antigen, the B antigen, both or neither, checked against the antibodies in your plasma
- RhD type: whether your red cells carry the RhD antigen
- Subgrouping: further typing reported by the laboratory, described on your results report
Useful for
- Finding out your blood group if you do not already know it
- Personal or family records, with the limits explained on this page
Sample: venous blood (whole blood; tube type confirmed by the laboratory). No fasting or preparation needed.
