The overfilled, duck-lip result that patients are understandably concerned about is not an inevitable consequence of lip filler. It is the consequence of too much product, placed without anatomical respect for the individual's lip structure, facial proportions, and natural lip shape. My approach at Juvenology is conservative by design. You can always add more. You cannot take away without dissolving. Natural lip filler results come from understanding the anatomy of the individual lip in front of me, not applying a standard volume regardless of what that lip actually needs.

Most lip treatments use between 0.5ml and 1ml of hyaluronic acid filler depending on the starting point, the goal, and the individual's lip anatomy. For first-time patients I almost always recommend starting with 0.5ml, assessing the settled result at two weeks, and building from there if more is wanted. In terms of duration, lip filler typically lasts six to nine months. The lips are a high-mobility area, which means the product metabolises faster here than in areas like the cheeks or temples. Patients who maintain treatment consistently tend to find they need slightly less product per session over time as the cumulative effect builds.

They are entirely different treatments that address different concerns and work through completely different mechanisms. A lip flip is not a substitute for filler and it will not add volume. It is appropriate for patients who want a subtle improvement in the appearance of the upper lip without any added fullness, or for those who want their upper lip to show more when they smile. Some patients benefit from both treatments together, filler for volume and definition combined with a lip flip for additional eversion of the upper lip. The consultation determines which is right for your specific concern and anatomy.

Yes, though it requires a different approach than treating lips that already have reasonable volume. Very thin lips benefit most from a gradual, staged approach over two or three sessions rather than attempting to achieve significant volume in a single treatment. The skin and tissue need time to adapt and the result looks considerably more natural when built incrementally. What I always tell patients with naturally thin lips is this: the goal is not to give you lips that look like someone else's. It is to give you the best version of your own lips, with improved definition, better hydration, and a shape that suits your face.

Honestly, the lips are one of the more sensitive areas we treat. They are densely innervated and most patients feel more discomfort here than in other facial areas. That said, there is a great deal we do to manage that discomfort effectively. Most patients describe the sensation as pressure and stinging rather than sharp pain, and find it considerably more manageable than they expected beforehand. The treatment itself takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Any discomfort is brief and resolves quickly once treatment is complete.

Lip swelling after filler is normal, expected, and temporary. The lips are particularly prone to swelling because of their vascular nature and the density of tissue in the area. Most patients experience the most significant swelling in the first 24 to 48 hours. The lips will look more enhanced immediately after treatment than the final settled result. Plan accordingly if you have an event or occasion coming up. I recommend leaving at least two weeks between your lip filler appointment and any significant event to allow the result to settle fully.

Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved at any point using hyaluronidase, the enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid safely and predictably. This is one of the most important features of HA filler and a significant reason why I will only use hyaluronic acid products rather than permanent or semi-permanent alternatives. Yes, but with an important caveat that you must tell me before treatment. The trauma of needle injections into or around the lips can trigger a herpes simplex reactivation in patients who carry the virus, even if you have not had a cold sore in years. This is a well-documented clinical consideration and it is entirely manageable. Please do not feel embarrassed to mention this. It is one of the most common clinical considerations in lip treatment and it will not change whether I treat you. It will only change how I prepare you for treatment safely.

Not all hyaluronic acid lip fillers are the same and the product selection matters significantly for the outcome. Lip fillers vary in their cohesivity, which describes how the gel holds together in tissue, their G prime, which describes their firmness and resistance to deformation, and their water-binding capacity. These properties determine how the filler behaves in the lip, how natural it feels, and how the result looks when the lips move. For lips, lower cohesivity and lower G prime products are almost always more appropriate because the lips are a high-movement area that requires a soft, natural feel rather than structural firmness. I select the product based on your starting anatomy, your goal, and what the tissue requires, not based on what happens to be in stock.
